Sugarcane Water Demands

Sugarcane is one of the most water-intensive crops, requiring 1,500-2,000mm of water during its 12-18 month growing cycle. Irrigation is essential in regions with seasonal rainfall patterns. Solar pumps provide the high-volume water delivery that sugarcane cultivation demands without the fuel costs of diesel pumps.

Sugarcane irrigation typically uses flood or furrow methods that require high flow rates at low pressure. Solar pumps with high-flow, low-head characteristics match these requirements. Systems must deliver 50-200 cubic meters per hectare per irrigation event.

System Configuration

Sugarcane irrigation systems use large-diameter pipelines or open channels to distribute water across fields. Solar pump stations draw from canals, rivers, or wells. Storage reservoirs buffer supply for peak demand periods. Field distribution uses gravity or low-pressure systems.

Solar arrays for sugarcane systems are substantial, often 10-50kW depending on farm size. High-flow pumps of 5-20kW capacity serve typical commercial operations. Multiple pump stations may serve different farm blocks.

Commercial Farm Economics

Commercial sugarcane farms benefit from solar irrigation through reduced operating costs and improved yield consistency. Fuel savings of $5,000-15,000 per year for typical farms offset capital costs within 3-5 years. Improved water timing increases sugar content and tonnage.

Rutan Pump manufactures high-flow solar pumps for sugarcane and other cash crop irrigation. Contact our commercial agriculture team for large-scale irrigation specifications.
