Oil Palm Water Requirements
Oil palm requires 1,500-2,500mm of annual rainfall for optimal production. In regions with seasonal dry periods, irrigation maintains yield and reduces biological stress. Solar pumps provide water supply for oil palm plantations in remote tropical locations where infrastructure is limited.
Young oil palms are particularly sensitive to water stress during establishment. Irrigation during the first 3-4 years significantly improves survival and early yield. Mature palms benefit from supplemental irrigation during extended dry spells.
Plantation Scale Systems
Oil palm plantations cover thousands of hectares, requiring large-scale irrigation infrastructure. Central pump stations serve multiple blocks through pipeline networks. Solar arrays of 50-200kW power high-capacity pumps. Storage reservoirs provide dry-season buffering.
Drip and micro-sprinkler systems are increasingly adopted for water conservation. These systems require higher pressure but use less water than flood methods. Solar pumps with pressure control and variable speed drives optimize energy use.
Sustainability Certification
RSPO and other sustainability certifications increasingly require responsible water management. Solar irrigation demonstrates environmental commitment. Reduced carbon footprint supports certification goals. These factors improve market access and pricing.
