Deep Well Solar Pump Cable Sizing Guide for Long Runs

Cable sizing is one of the easiest parts of a deep well solar pump project to underestimate. A pump may be correctly selected for flow and head, but the system can still lose performance if the cable run is too long or the conductor is too small.
Why voltage drop matters in solar pump systems
Deep well projects often place the controller near the solar array while the pump sits far below the well head. The total cable length can include vertical depth, horizontal distance, and service loops. Excessive voltage drop can cause weak startup, lower flow, overheating, or controller protection alarms. This is why cable information should be reviewed together with the solar pump flow and head calculation before quotation.
Information buyers should provide
For accurate cable selection, provide pump voltage, motor power, pump current, well depth, controller-to-well distance, cable route, ambient temperature, and local installation standard. If the system uses an AC/DC input option, confirm both operating modes because cable and protection requirements may differ.
For controller matching, review the cable plan together with the MPPT solar pump controller specification. A well-matched controller improves startup and protection, but it cannot remove the electrical loss caused by undersized cable.
Procurement checklist for deep well projects
Ask the supplier for the recommended cable cross-section, maximum cable distance, wiring diagram, connector standard, waterproof joint method, and spare cable recommendation. For distributor orders, include the cable plan in the technical sheet so installers do not substitute a smaller cable on site.
