Understanding Head Pressure Requirements

High head applications require pumps capable of generating substantial pressure to lift water from deep sources or deliver water to elevated storage. These applications include deep wells, high-rise buildings, and systems requiring water delivery to distant elevated tanks.

Head pressure is measured in meters or feet of water column. One atmosphere of pressure lifts water approximately 10 meters. High head pumps must generate sufficient pressure to overcome this lift plus pipeline friction losses.

Pump Technology for High Head

Centrifugal pumps excel at moderate head but become less efficient at very high heads. Multi-stage centrifugal designs stack impellers to increase pressure capability while maintaining reasonable efficiency. For very high head applications, positive displacement pumps may be more appropriate.

Submersible multistage pumps incorporate multiple impeller stages in a single housing, providing high head capability in compact form factors. These pumps are designed for installation in deep wells where head requirements exceed surface pump capabilities.

Solar Power at High Head

High head pumping requires significant power input regardless of energy source. Solar arrays must be sized accordingly. Larger panels or tracking systems may be necessary to provide sufficient power for demanding high head applications.

Flow rate at high head is typically lower than low head applications due to power constraints. System sizing must balance the competing requirements of head, flow, and available solar energy.

Selection and Application

Accurate head calculation is critical for high head applications. Include well depth, vertical lift, and all friction losses. Consider future expansion potential when sizing systems. Conservative sizing ensures adequate performance as components age.
