Sizing Fundamentals
Proper solar pump sizing ensures adequate water delivery without excessive cost. Sizing requires understanding water demand, source characteristics, and solar resource. Over-sizing wastes money. Under-sizing fails to meet needs. Accurate sizing balances performance and cost.
The basic sizing equation relates hydraulic energy to solar energy. Hydraulic power in watts equals flow rate times head times gravity divided by pump efficiency. Solar array power must exceed hydraulic power by a margin that accounts for system losses.
Demand Calculation
Water demand includes irrigation requirements, livestock needs, domestic use, and any commercial applications. Irrigation demand depends on crop type, climate, and soil. Livestock need 30-100 liters per animal daily. Domestic use is 50-200 liters per person.
Daily demand determines total pump operation hours. Seasonal variation affects peak requirements. Storage capacity buffers daily fluctuations. Annual demand patterns inform array sizing for worst-case months.
Head and Flow Analysis
Total dynamic head includes vertical lift from water level to delivery point, pipeline friction losses, and discharge pressure. Well drawdown reduces water level during pumping. Friction depends on pipe diameter, length, and flow rate.
Pump curves show flow versus head relationships at different power inputs. System curves show head requirements at different flows. Operating point is where pump and system curves intersect. Solar variation shifts pump curves throughout the day.
