Tea Cultivation Water Needs
Tea plants require consistent moisture for leaf production and quality. While tea grows in regions with high rainfall, dry seasons and irregular precipitation create irrigation needs. Solar pumps provide sustainable water supply for tea plantations in hilly terrain where grid access is limited.
Tea is typically grown in mountainous regions with elevation of 600-2,000 meters. These locations often have excellent solar resource due to high altitude. However, terrain creates pumping challenges with significant head requirements. High-head solar pumps address these challenges.
Plantation Irrigation Design
Tea plantation irrigation uses sprinkler or drip systems following contour lines. Pumps lift water from valley streams or springs to elevated storage tanks. Gravity distribution reduces downstream pumping needs. Storage capacity of 3-7 days buffers dry periods.
Young tea plants require more frequent irrigation than mature bushes. Shade trees in some plantations reduce solar resource for panels but improve tea quality. Panel placement must balance these factors. Pruning cycles affect water demand seasonally.
Quality and Yield Benefits
Consistent irrigation maintains leaf production during dry periods. Proper water stress management before harvest can concentrate flavors. Reliable water supply enables consistent processing during peak harvest. These factors improve both yield and quality premiums.
