Fundamental Sizing Principles
Proper solar pump sizing ensures the system meets water requirements while optimizing cost-effectiveness. Undersized pumps cannot meet demand, while oversized systems waste money on unnecessary capacity. Engineering approach to sizing balances multiple factors to achieve optimal results.
The basic sizing process involves determining daily water requirements, calculating total dynamic head, assessing solar resource availability, and selecting pump and array components that meet these specifications within budget constraints.
Determining Water Requirements
Calculate daily water needs based on intended use: residential household supply typically requires 50-100 liters per person per day, agricultural irrigation needs vary from 5,000 to 50,000+ liters per hectare per day depending on crops and climate, and livestock watering requirements depend on animal type and herd size.
Consider seasonal variations when sizing for agriculture, as irrigation demand peaks during dry seasons when solar resource is highest. This coincidence of high demand and high solar availability generally supports reliable system operation without excessive storage.
Calculating Total Dynamic Head
Total dynamic head (TDH) represents the total pressure the pump must overcome, including vertical lift from water source to discharge point plus friction losses in the pipeline. TDH determines the pump pressure rating required regardless of flow rate.
Measure actual well depth and vertical distance to storage tank. Calculate pipeline friction losses based on pipe diameter, length, and flow rate. Sum all components to determine required pump head rating.
Solar Resource Assessment
Solar resource varies by geography, season, and local conditions. Annual average solar hours provide baseline estimates, but specific site shading and orientation affect actual power generation. Panel tilt should be optimized for year-round or seasonal use.
