Solar pump controller residual DC voltage is a different issue from whether the pump has stopped. A controller can retain stored electrical energy after its incoming supply is isolated, while PV conductors upstream of a disconnect can remain energized in daylight. A dark display, zero water flow, or an open switch therefore does not establish that every part of the installation is safe to access.

This guide helps an owner, EPC contractor, or distributor specify the isolation evidence required before qualified personnel service a solar pump controller. It is not a live-testing tutorial or authorization to open equipment. The exact controller manual, site electrical safety procedure, local rules, and competent person's assessment govern the work. The accompanying solar pump and controller image is a concept illustration, not a real RUTANPUMP installation or wiring diagram.

Separate the energy boundaries

A PV pumping installation has several boundaries that can be confused during a quick service visit. The generator side includes modules, strings, combiner equipment, and cables that may produce voltage whenever illuminated. The controller input side begins at its designated supply terminals. Inside some controllers, DC-link capacitors can store energy. The motor side is another circuit, with its own isolation and potential mechanical or electrical hazards.

Hybrid systems add further possibilities: an AC supply, generator, battery source, auxiliary control supply, or connected monitoring equipment may remain active. Their presence must be confirmed from the actual drawings rather than inferred from the words solar pump. A single PV disconnect cannot be assumed to isolate all these sources.

The LORENTZ explanation of its S1-PV disconnect describes a solar pumping manufacturer's approach to disconnecting the PV generator for installation and service. That source is useful for understanding the boundary, not for assigning LORENTZ switch ratings or installation rules to another manufacturer's controller. Obtain the approved arrangement for the exact RUTANPUMP system being supplied.

Why stopping the controller is not isolation

A software stop command controls operation. It may leave the supply and internal circuits energized. A remote float command or dry-run input can also stop water delivery without removing hazardous electrical energy. Treat those signals as operating controls unless the applicable equipment documentation explicitly gives them another function.

A disconnect needs the correct DC application, voltage and current ratings, pole arrangement, environmental suitability, and manufacturer-approved use. Selecting it from an AC rating alone is inadequate. Its location matters: it should be clear which terminals and cables are isolated and which remain connected to the PV generator.

Before acceptance, compare the labelled isolation points with the as-built single-line diagram. A drawing that shows only one power source is incomplete if the installed system has a hybrid supply or separate control transformer. Remote restart, stored settings, and automatic recovery behavior must also be considered when planning restoration.

Stored energy and discharge time are model-specific

For a capacitor, stored energy is one half of capacitance multiplied by voltage squared. A hypothetical 2 millifarad capacitor at 400 volts stores 160 joules. This example illustrates the squared voltage relationship only. It is not a RUTANPUMP component value, a safe-touch limit, a discharge test result, or a prediction of the waiting time needed for any controller.

The actual discharge behavior depends on the circuit, initial voltage, component tolerances, faults, and any connected energy sources. Do not infer a guaranteed discharge time from capacitance alone or from a stopwatch measurement on another unit. A failed discharge path can defeat the expected timing.

Schneider Electric's explanation of DC-bus discharge time for specific Altivar drives demonstrates why published discharge conditions belong to a defined model and voltage range. Its numerical limits must not be transferred to a solar pump controller. Ask the controller supplier for the exact waiting period, prescribed verification method, designated access points, and response when discharge is abnormal.

The maintenance-release evidence package

The OSHA electrical work-practice rule, 29 CFR 1910.333, distinguishes de-energization, stored energy, isolation, and verification by qualified personnel. It is a useful authoritative reference for US workplaces; another destination may require different applicable rules. Do not reduce the process to turning off a controller and waiting a generic number of minutes.

The owner should prepare the following worksheet with the supplier and responsible electrical professional. It records decisions and evidence, not a step-by-step probing procedure. Verification equipment, access, PPE, competence, and limits must be defined by the approved safe-work method.

  • Boundary or record: Controller identity; Required evidence: Model, serial number, manual revision, input topology; Unresolved condition: Wrong or unavailable documentation

  • Boundary or record: PV generator boundary; Required evidence: As-built strings, combiner, disconnect location; Unresolved condition: Upstream energized conductors not identified

  • Boundary or record: Additional supplies; Required evidence: AC, generator, battery, auxiliary and control sources; Unresolved condition: Any potential source unexplained

  • Boundary or record: Isolation devices; Required evidence: Approved device type, DC ratings, labels and locking arrangement; Unresolved condition: Operating stop mistaken for isolation

  • Boundary or record: Stored-energy instructions; Required evidence: Supplier waiting time, conditions and prescribed verification; Unresolved condition: Generic delay substituted for model evidence

  • Boundary or record: Qualified-person verification; Required evidence: Authorized record of the required de-energized condition; Unresolved condition: Display state or elapsed time used as sole proof

  • Boundary or record: Service scope; Required evidence: Components and circuits authorized for access; Unresolved condition: Work expands beyond the released boundary

  • Boundary or record: Restoration authorization; Required evidence: Covers, connections, personnel clearance and restart review; Unresolved condition: Automatic restart or unfinished work unresolved

Keep the worksheet with the job permit or maintenance record. A checkbox without its supporting model manual, identified isolation point, and competent-person record is not a complete acceptance package. Photographs may help identify labels and hardware, but a photograph of an open switch cannot establish absence of voltage.

Request the right documents during controller selection

PV matching usually concentrates on cold-weather open-circuit voltage, operating voltage, current, and array sizing. Maintain that design review, but add the service boundary to the purchase specification. The array and motor matching guide covers those operating limits. Isolation documentation answers a separate question: how the selected assembly is safely made available for maintenance.

Request an input connection drawing, approved disconnect specification, hybrid-source isolation arrangement where relevant, residual-energy instructions, permitted service tasks, and replacement-part documentation. Ask whether field replacement is supported or whether the controller must be returned as a complete unit. A sealed enclosure should not be opened merely because a distributor has spare capacitors.

Confirm the language and revision of the manual supplied with production equipment. A demonstration sample may have different circuitry or labels from the delivered controller. If a board, firmware revision, input option, or discharge circuit changes, require review of the maintenance instructions as well as the performance specification.

Handle abnormal discharge without improvised fixes

If the prescribed verification does not establish the required condition after the documented wait, stop the service release and follow the manufacturer's fault procedure. Do not bridge terminals, attach an improvised discharge resistor, or assume a reading is harmless because it is lower than it was previously. An abnormal condition may indicate another energy source, a circuit fault, or unsuitable measurement arrangements.

Record the controller identity, work authorization, identified sources, elapsed interval, and the qualified person's observations in the service report. The responsible professional should determine what information can be obtained safely and whether the unit needs manufacturer evaluation. The customer should not be asked to open the equipment for photographs or measurements to support a warranty claim.

The existing DC-bus capacitor maintenance article addresses component ageing and condition assessment. The present release worksheet does not establish capacitor life, diagnose ESR, or authorize component replacement. Those are separate tasks with their own evidence and competence requirements.

Restore operation under a defined release

After authorized maintenance, restore the installation according to the approved procedure. Review enclosure closure, changed parts, relevant connection checks, removed temporary arrangements, and personnel clearance. Consider whether sunlight, a tank-level command, or a remote control can start the system as soon as power returns.

Compare the restored configuration with the approved baseline: controller settings, motor selection, PV string arrangement, protective devices, and auxiliary supply options. A pump that runs after service has passed an operating observation, not necessarily every electrical or hydraulic acceptance requirement. Retain the checks applicable to the actual work and reopen deviations rather than marking the whole system accepted from water flow alone.

Use the RUTANPUMP solar water pump range for the product context. Select a compatible controller and array from verified model information; do not use this general article as a substitute for the delivered manual.

Frequently asked questions

Does an unlit controller display prove the DC bus is discharged?

No. The display is an operating indication, not proof that all energy sources or stored energy have been removed. Qualified personnel must use the verification required by the approved equipment and site procedure.

Can the waiting time from another drive manual be used for a solar pump controller?

No. Discharge time and verification conditions are model-specific. Obtain the instructions for the exact controller and supply arrangement instead of transferring another manufacturer's numerical limit.

Are PV modules safe to handle electrically after the controller disconnect is opened?

Opening the controller-side disconnect does not inherently de-energize PV modules or generator-side conductors in daylight. The approved isolation plan must identify which boundaries remain energized and restrict access accordingly.
