Bifacial PV for Solar Pump Controllers: Rear-Side Gain and Input-Current Limits
Bifacial PV for solar pump controllers must be checked against input-current limits as well as front-side module watts. Rear illumination can change the current available from each string. A controller that appears compatible with a monofacial calculation may therefore need a different parallel-string count, protection design, or written acceptance when the actual module and mounting arrangement are considered.

The RUTANPUMP catalog photograph illustrates a submersible pump, not a tested bifacial installation or a particular controller rating. This guide addresses the electrical design boundary between the array and controller. It does not predict a universal energy gain, pumping-hour extension, or water-yield increase. Those outcomes depend on the site, hydraulic duty, module configuration, controller behavior, and operating restrictions.
Identify which module rating is being quoted
Begin with the exact module model and current datasheet. Identify whether a stated power or current value represents front-side standard test conditions, a stated rear-side contribution, or another defined test condition. A marketing phrase such as extra generation is not a design input. Record the conditions behind each number rather than combining values from different columns.
The official Canadian Solar bifacial installation manual, revision 1.6 from May 2020, explains that bifacial operating current depends on mounting and ground-reflection conditions and that component ratings need appropriate corrections. This is an illustrative manufacturer reference for its listed module families, not the current manual for every bifacial module. Obtain the latest applicable instructions for the exact supplied product.
The laboratory's Bifacial PV Test-Bed Irradiance Measurements dataset records front and rear irradiance separately in a defined test arrangement. It supports an important measurement principle: rear exposure is a site-dependent input that should be characterized. It does not establish the rear contribution for a farm, borehole, or RUTANPUMP installation without corresponding evidence.
Separate energy forecasting from maximum-current design
An annual or seasonal energy estimate describes production across many conditions. A maximum-current check asks whether equipment remains within its approved envelope during a credible high-current condition. The two calculations serve different purposes. A modest average rear contribution does not by itself define the maximum electrical stress used for component selection.
Record the mounting height, tilt, row spacing, rear obstruction, ground cover, seasonal changes, and any unusual reflective surroundings. Snow, a pale surface, vegetation changes, or a revised support structure may alter rear exposure. Do not assign a fixed rear gain solely because the module is labeled bifacial. Use the applicable module method, engineering model, and project design basis.
The existing array oversizing and clipping guide introduces the broader array-to-controller problem. The narrower task here is to carry an explicitly stated bifacial current assumption through the parallel-string calculation and distinguish it from power clipping. A higher array wattage and a higher allowable short-circuit current are not interchangeable approvals.
Ask for distinct controller limits
Request the manufacturer's maximum DC voltage, operating or MPPT current limit, permissible PV short-circuit current, allowable array power, input topology, thermal derating, and any restrictions on oversizing. Some controllers state several of these; others do not publish enough information for approval. A missing short-circuit-current limit should be resolved in writing, not inferred from motor output power.
An operating-current limit may control the current the electronics choose to draw under normal conditions. It does not automatically prove that every possible array source current is acceptable during faults, transients, startup, or an abnormal operating state. The relevant manufacturer must define the permitted array and protection arrangement for that controller.
Determine whether multiple input terminals share one electrical limit or represent genuinely independent trackers. Two labeled terminals do not necessarily double the permissible input current. Document how strings are assigned and what currents can combine at every connection point. Keep voltage, current, power, temperature, and protection checks separate until the complete configuration is reviewed.
Hypothetical current-boundary calculation
The following numbers are deliberately hypothetical. They are not module specifications, RUTANPUMP controller ratings, universal correction factors, or a complete code calculation. They show how an overlooked current assumption can change an initial compatibility decision.
Assume the chosen module's front-side short-circuit current is 13.0 A. For a preliminary scenario, the project engineer applies an illustrative rear-related current multiplier of 1.15. Before any additional applicable design factors, the scenario current per string becomes 13.0 x 1.15 = 14.95 A. Two identical parallel strings would present 2 x 14.95 = 29.90 A on that simplified basis.
If a hypothetical controller permits 28 A of PV short-circuit current under the same stated rating basis, the two-string scenario exceeds that limit. Using front-side current alone would have produced 26 A and an apparently acceptable result. This comparison is valid only after confirming that the calculated and permitted values use compatible definitions and that all required corrections have been included.
Do not solve the problem by assuming normal clipping protects the controller. Possible design responses include a controller with a suitable documented input envelope, fewer parallel strings with all voltage and power checks repeated, or another manufacturer-approved configuration. Changing series count to fix current without checking cold voltage can introduce a different violation.
Bifacial array compatibility worksheet
Use one worksheet per proposed module-controller configuration. Retain assumptions and missing information rather than filling blanks with optimistic defaults.
Module identity: manufacturer, exact model, datasheet revision, front-side Voc, Vmp, Isc, Imp, tolerances, temperature coefficients, and the basis of any bifacial rating.
Rear-exposure basis: installation geometry, ground condition, seasonal envelope, calculation or measurement method, rear-current treatment, uncertainty, and engineering approval.
Array topology: modules per string, parallel strings per input, shared connections, conductor route, combiner arrangement, and available fault-current sources.
Voltage check: cold maximum, hot operating range, startup conditions, controller maximum voltage, and MPPT-window compatibility.
Current check: corrected string and combined currents, operating-current limit, permissible short-circuit current, input sharing, and remaining unresolved margins.
Components: cable ampacity, connectors, disconnects, fuse and holder suitability where required, reverse-current assessment, and enclosure temperatures.
Controller evidence: model, manual revision, thermal derating, allowed array power, oversizing conditions, written supplier response, and warranty restrictions.
Release record: accepted configuration, excluded conditions, drawings, reviewer, date, outstanding actions, and commissioning measurements.
The worksheet is an information-control tool, not an installation instruction. Electrical protection and conductor calculations must follow the applicable jurisdiction and approved equipment documentation. Do not copy a multiplier from another manufacturer's example without checking its purpose and scope.
Verify the complete installation safely
Qualified personnel should commission the approved configuration using a documented procedure and suitable instruments. Capture module and controller identities, actual wiring, ambient and module conditions, front and rear exposure where the test requires it, controller input measurements, operating state, temperatures, and hydraulic output. Measurements taken during weak rear exposure cannot validate an unobserved high-current design condition.
Compare the measured operating point with the documented model and manufacturer limits. Unexpected current differences can reflect shading, rear obstruction, module mismatch, wiring, instrumentation, or controller operation. Preserve the conditions needed to interpret the readings. Never create an improvised short circuit or disconnect loaded PV connectors to obtain a quick current number.
Use the PV string-current diagnosis guide for the measurement context. Keep diagnostic observations separate from design approval: a successful morning demonstration does not waive a maximum voltage, source-current, thermal, or protection requirement. Recheck the calculation if module type, string count, mounting geometry, or reflective surroundings change.
Frequently asked questions
Can the front-side watt rating alone approve a bifacial array?
No. Check the defined voltage and current conditions, rear-exposure treatment, parallel strings, controller input limits, protection, and temperature envelope for the actual configuration.
Does controller power clipping make excessive array source current acceptable?
Not by assumption. Operating power control and permissible PV source or short-circuit current are distinct limits. Obtain written manufacturer acceptance for the proposed array and protection arrangement.
Is one fixed bifacial gain suitable for every pumping site?
No. Rear exposure depends on installation geometry, ground reflectivity, obstruction, season, and the chosen rating or modeling basis. State and justify the project's current-design assumptions.
